A
new nationwide study indicates that pet obesity continues to expand.
According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), almost
half of the nation's dogs and cats are now overweight or obese. The
group conducted the National Pet Obesity Awareness Day study in October
2007 and found 43% of all dogs and 53% of all cats were classified as
overweight or obese by a veterinary healthcare provider; 10% of all
dogs and 19% of all cats were classified as obese.
The startling fact was the number of obese cats
Calabash, NC (PRWEB) July 14, 2008 -- A new nationwide study indicates that pet obesity continues to expand. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), almost half of the nation's dogs and cats are now overweight or obese. The group conducted the National Pet Obesity Awareness Day study in October 2007 and found 43% of all dogs and 53% of all cats were classified as overweight or obese by a veterinary healthcare provider; 10% of all dogs and 19% of all cats were classified as obese.
"The startling fact was the number of obese cats," comments the study's lead investigator and founder of APOP, Dr. Ernie Ward. "We knew from a pilot study completed in early 2007 that obese cats were the fastest growing segment. It is alarming that almost one-in-five US cats is now clinically obese. This means we will continue to see an increase in cases of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and other weight-related diseases."
The study also looked into pet owners' assessment of their dog's or cat's weight. "We found that the majority of pet owners understand that their pet is too heavy," notes Dr. Ward. In fact, 63% of dog owners with overweight or obese canines classified their dog correctly and 73% of cat owners with flabby felines stated that their cat was overweight or obese. "As we questioned pet owners further, we discovered that many of them had never been told that their dog or cat needed to shed a few pounds. I believe that in order to win the war on obesity it must begin with bilateral communication: pet owners need to ask if their pet is too heavy and veterinarians need to tell owners when a pet is overweight."
According to APOP estimates, this study indicates that as many as 32 million dogs and 46 million cats in the US are overweight or obese. Almost 8 million dogs and 17 million cats are thought to be obese.
"Carrying a little extra weight isn't a stable condition that's simply annoying or unsightly. Fat is biologically active tissue and an excess amount negatively impacts almost every body system," states Dr. Ward. "We're in real danger of raising an entire generation of pets that will live a shorter life expectancy than the dogs and cats we enjoyed as children."
The nationwide study was conducted in 98 small animal veterinary clinics and included 704 dogs and 282 cats.
About APOP and Dr. Ward:
The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention is an independent
organization not associated with any veterinary pharmaceutical, pet
food, or other veterinary industry organization. Dr. Ernie Ward is a
licensed veterinarian, certified personal trainer, and USA Triathlon
accredited coach. He and APOP help people and pets lose weight and
sustain a healthy lifestyle by creating parallel weight loss and
lifestyle programs.

New report says toxic toys are killing parrots. Birds prefer the "back to nature" approach.
Birdtricks.com one of the leading suppliers of bird training videos in America, released a report today detailing high toxicity levels in common bird toys, and they state that these toxins are killing parrots, lots of parrots.

Chet Womach, the founder of birdtricks.com is alarmed at the amount of parrots being affected. "We hear from thousands of bird owners how poorly made toys are harming their pet parrots, or even killing them in some circumstances. There are currently no US regulations on how pettoys are made and thus, toys are made the most inexpensive way possible, even at the risk of the pet they intend to serve."
Birds love variety and
require it to remain stimulated, happy and non-aggressive. A constant supply of
fresh, natural toys will reap huge rewards for your relationship with your
parrot!
|
One of the major problems is that parrots, like other animals, play by putting objects in their mouths and chew on them continually. This is normal behavior for a parrot, but when chewing on toys that contain poisons such as lead paint, zinc which is used in metal manufacturing, or poly plastics, the toy then becomes a toxic cocktail. Parrots that consume these types of toys may have serious medical issues such as regurgitation, depression, seizures, weakness, and the list goes on.
Womach states, "parrots are used to consuming the very things they play with because of their constant chewing. A parrot finds the chewing stimulating and it's quite good for them, however consuming un-natural materials is horrible for a birds health." He ads, "Would you let your child chew on and consume toys made with lead paint? I hope not."
Recent reports by American Veterinarian Association and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) note concerns about contaminants and toxins in pet toys. Dr. Steve Hansen, Director of the ASPCA stated in one report that, "the use of lead-based paints or materials in any pet toy is inappropriate."
Womach says the solution is simple, "Give your birds natural fiber toys that emulate their real environment. Natural toys provide parrots a healthy alternative to mass-production toys found in all pet stores, and parrots benefit from the clean, natural ingredients that they can chew, rip and shred all they want, just like in the wild." Womach says parrot toys should consist of natural ingredients like palm husks, cuttle bone that is rich in calcium, coconut shells and human-grade, consumable food coloring. "Toys made this way ensure a happy, healthy parrot who bites less, screams less, is more energetic and is well stimulated just like in nature" said Womach.
"BirdTricks.com supplies healthy, natural toys as an alternative to mass-produced toys found in pet stores and other major retailers." He continues, "BirdTricks.com/parrot-toys has an amazing line of natural parrot toys that are a great value and that birds love. We encourage bird owners to carefully inventory their bird's toy collection and see if toys may be causing a health risk to your beloved bird."
Womach states that replacing a birds toys regularly will help the bird feel like it does in nature, having plenty of options to chew on, which will make your bird a more pleasant and healthy bird. "Birds love variety and require it to remain stimulated, happy and non-aggressive. A constant supply of fresh, natural toys will reap huge rewards for your relationship with your parrot!"
BirdTricks.com has been supplying bird videos since 2002 and is a leader in bird training, and Bird Toys Chet Womach is an expert bird trainer andis often referred to as the "bird trainer to the stars." To learn more about all natural parrot toys, visit BirdTricks.com

A man has admitted in an Australian court to downloading octopus porn, as well as other images of sexual acts with ponies, tigers and snakes.
Rodney Scott McLagan, 48, also plead guilty to possessing child pornography – but his defence lawyer insisted that he had 'little or no interest' in the child porn, and only had it on his computer because it had been included in the bulk download of bestiality material.
'In respect of the child exploitation material while there's a lot of it he only looked at 20 per cent. He searched the internet for the bestiality material but there was no active search for the child exploitation material,' his lawyer David Barclay told the Supreme Court in Hobart, Tasmania.
Barclay added that McLagan sought out the bestiality porn because of a personality disorder, which gave him such low self-esteem that he thought of himself as 'some sort of beast.'
McLagan has been bailed, and will be sentenced on July 17.

Mo the Chimpanzee escaped from Jungle Exotics, a company that trains animals for the entertainment industry.
Mo is not only toilet trained but he can eat with a knife and fork. If he does end up at your house though I would only let him use the plastic silverware.
He prefers the Charmin toilet paper - so don't give him the cheap stuff. You don't want to mess with Moe.
Some guidelines if a Chimp comes knocking at your door...

Gus the dog has three legs, one eye and no hair, except for a white tuft on the top of his head. He's a real winner.

Gus, a pedigree Chinese Crested from St. Petersburg, Fla, competes in the 2008 World's Ugliest Dog Contest held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, Calif. Friday June 20, 2008. Gus won top pedigree and beat out the past "Ring of Champions" to take home the grand prize
The pedigree Chinese crested won the World's Ugliest Dog contest on Saturday at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Northern California.
His owner, Jeanenne Teed, brought Gus all the way from Florida, to compete for the dubious distinction
After the excitement of the moment, Teed characterized her dog's reaction: "Well, I think right now he's ready for a nap."
The Chinese crested breed is a popular choice in this annual contest. Last year's champ, Elwood, was a Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix.
Gus' owner won $500 and will be flown to New York to appear on "CBS This Morning." The event will be aired on the Animal Planet network in October.

A family's dream home became a stinky nightmare after skunks moved in. They chewed underneath Kerry McCullough's house in Sheffield Lake, about 20 miles west of Cleveland, and started their own family.
McCullough said the odor from the four skunks is like the stench of burning plastic, so bad that it hurt his lungs.
The squatters went unnoticed until the heat was turned on last winter. The McCulloughs' house uses hot water heat with exposed pipes running under the floors. When a skunk brushed up against the pipes, it would spray.
"It would be 30 degrees, and I'd have the windows open," said Karen McCullough, 46. "I'd go to the grocery store and people would say, 'It smells like skunk.'"
What's really foul is how much damage the critters can cause. The McCulloughs had to replace doors and walls and take their kitchen apart, for a total cost of about $75,000.
Kerry McCullough said at least his insurance doesn't stink: It covered most of the bills.

MacGyver's got nothing on this monkey. A spider monkey new to the city's Washington Park Zoo used a garden hose to scale the walls of a moat and make a break for freedom.
Workers were cleaning the moat at the time Wednesday. Zoo Director Johnny Martinez says workers had figured the monkeys would remain inside their enclosure during the cleaning even though the moat was empty of water.
However, one monkey made it past the moat, grabbed the hose and jumped onto the roof of a water filtration plant.
The zoo staff recaptured the adventurous monkey at a nearby boat dealership, where they found it perched atop a white and blue speedboat.
Martinez says the freedom-seeking monkey is sociable and was not any danger to people.

Micro bubbles produced by micro bubble generator Wan Love for dogs
reach the skin and hair roots of a dog and clean it without use of
shampoo. The micro bubble generator from IDEC Corp, Japan is externally
attached to the dog bath, by applying the company's micro bubble
generation technology GALFor. It can stably produce bubbles whose
diameter is 20μm on average and density is 600,000 bubbles/cm3. .The
GALF is a technology to continuously and stably generate micro bubbles
without using a compressor. The surfaces of the micro bubbles generated
by the GALF are negatively charged, so they attach to
positively-charged and neutral organic substances in a liquid,
dissolving dirt and grease. In addition, bursting bubbles clean the
surfaces of objects.
IDEC Corp developed a technology to keep air dissolved in hot water before the water is ejected from the shower head and to generate micro bubbles in the ejected water. As a result, the
generator provides not only a massage effect by the water stream but
also a cleaning effect by the micro bubbles. The generator can be used
just by putting a hose into a bathtub without any piping work. Also,
with no air adjustment valve, it can be easily controlled by using
switches. IDEC Corp will release micro bubble generator Wan Love Yu for
a dog bath in Japan on June 20, 2008.

Hector the dog was left howling in frustration after he took an unfortunate turn during a mouse hunt.
The Norfolk terrier got his head wedged in an owl-shaped earthenware pot after chasing the creature into it.
Owner Molly Mapes couldn't pull off the heavy ornament and had to call firefighters to rescue her pet.
They used hydraulic equipment – normally used to cut casualties from cars – to free her five-year-old pet, who was not hurt in his escapade.
'My grandson heard a noise in the garden and found Hector with the pot on his head,' said Mrs Mapes, 65.
'Hector was rushing around the garden, bumping into things. I don't know whether he thought the mouse had gone in the pot but he went in after it. He is quite a chunky lad and got stuck.'

The terrier could breathe because the ornament had holes in it and the firefighters used a screwdriver to enlarge them.
'Hector made some strange noises while we were cutting the pot off but as soon as he was free he seemed really happy and not in any distress at all,' added Mrs Mapes, of Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex.
Stephen Glover, the firefighter in charge, said: 'It is one of the strangest sights I have ever seen – a little dog with a huge owl-shaped pot stuck over his head.'

| MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Hogzilla is being made into a horror movie.
But the sequel may be even bigger: Meet Monster Pig. An 11-year-old
Alabama boy used a pistol to kill a wild hog his father says weighed a
staggering 1,051 pounds and measured 9-feet-4 from the tip of its snout
to the base of its tail. Think hams as big as car tires. If the claims are accurate, Jamison Stone's trophy boar would be bigger than Hogzilla, the famed wild hog that grew to seemingly mythical proportions after being killed in south Georgia in 2004. Hogzilla originally was thought to weigh 1,000 pounds and measure 12 feet in length. National Geographic experts who unearthed its remains believe the animal actually weighed about 800 pounds and was 8 feet long. Regardless of the comparison, Jamison is reveling in the attention over his pig, which has a Web site put up by his father—http://www.monsterpig.com —that is generating Internet buzz. "It feels really good," Jamison, of Pickensville, said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "It's a good accomplishment. I probably won't ever kill anything else that big." Jamison, who killed his first deer at age 5, was hunting with father Mike Stone and two guides in east Alabama on May 3 when he bagged Hogzilla II. He said he shot the huge animal eight times with a .50- caliber revolver and chased it for three hours through hilly woods before finishing it off with a point-blank shot. Through it all there was the fear that the animal would turn and charge them, as wild boars have a reputation of doing. "I was a little bit scared, a little bit excited," said Jamison, who just finished the sixth grade on the honor roll at Christian Heritage Academy, a small, private school. His father said that, just to be extra safe, he and the guides had high-powered rifles aimed and ready to fire in case the beast with 5- inch tusks decided to charge. With the pig finally dead in a creek bed on the 2,500-acre Lost Creek Plantation, a commercial hunting preserve in Delta, trees had to be cut down and a backhoe brought in to bring Jamison's prize out of the woods. It was hauled on a truck to the Clay County Farmers Exchange in Lineville, where Jeff Kinder said they used his scale, which was recently calibrated, to weigh the hog. Kinder, who didn't witness the weigh-in, said he was baffled to hear the reported weight of 1,051 pounds because his scale—an old, manual style with sliding weights—only measures to the nearest 10. "I didn't quite understand that," he said. Mike Stone said the scale balanced one notch past the 1,050-pound mark, and he thought it meant a weight of 1,051 pounds. "It probably weighed 1,060 pounds. We were just afraid to change it once the story was out," he said. The hog's head is now being mounted on an extra-large foam form by Jerry Cunningham of Jerry's Taxidermy in Oxford. Cunningham said the animal measured 54 inches around the head, 74 inches around the shoulders and 11 inches from the eyes to the end of its snout. "It's huge," he said. "It's just the biggest thing I've ever seen." Mike Stone is having sausage made from the rest of the animal. "We'll probably get 500 to 700 pounds," he said. Jamison, meanwhile, has been offered a small part in "The Legend of Hogzilla," a small-time horror flick based on the tale of the Georgia boar. The movie is holding casting calls with plans to begin filming in Georgia. Jamison is enjoying the newfound celebrity generated by the hog hunt, but he said he prefers hunting pheasants to monster pigs. "They are a little less dangerous." |
