New University Study Shows E. Coli, Mold and High Amounts of Other Bacteria Growing in Electric Toothbrushes; In Some Cases, Over 100 Times More Bacteria than their Manual Counterparts
An Arizona physician has responded to this study by releasing her product to the public. The Sonic Seal is a waterproof silicone cover for your electric toothbrush. It will keep it dry on the inside and eliminate those potentially dangerous microbes.

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) July 16, 2008 -- A June study performed by the University of Arizona shows electric toothbrushes contain 100 times the amount of bacteria than their manual counterpart. The study also revealed mold and E. coli (the bacteria found in fecal material) growing out of control inside the replacement heads of electric toothbrushes. The highest count of bacteria was found in the Sonicare electric toothbrush, the brand that has sold millions and recommended by many dentists.

This report has an even more significant impact coming on the heals of other University studies reporting a relationship between gum disease and risk of heart attack. Researchers have identified the bacterial culprits of gum disease inside human artery clogging plaque, the first concrete evidence to place these pathogens at the heart of the circulatory crime scene. It may soon be possible to target the bacteria with antibiotics or vaccines and lower the risk of heart attack.
Identifying that the "gunk" in her Sonicare toothbrush leaks into her mouth when brushing, an Arizona pediatrician and microbiologist has invented a solution: The Sonic Seal. It's a waterproof, silicone cover that keeps the inside of your brush dry and eliminates that moist environment where microbes thrive. Dr. Sara Kertz says, "I have a Sonicare toothbrush and I love it. Over 90% of the people I have talked to have this issue, these electric toothbrushes require an added responsibility to keep them clean and people just don't do it. Expecting your children to keep these toothbrushes clean is unrealistic. I now supply The Sonic Seal to my patients for free and with their urging, they are currently offered to everyone. It may sound silly, but it has changed my brushing experience. I just rinse and go and don't have to worry about that bacteria any longer".
The Sonic Seal was introduced to the public this summer, not soon enough according to hundreds of their customers who have not returned one order. The Sonic Seal is available online, http://www.thesonicseal.com along with video of the University of Arizona report.
I discovered this myself, so it is great there is a website to back up my thoughts....
I have SoniCare toothbrush and I clean the inside of the of my toothbruch as per instructions. But even then it is just impossible to clean the black mould as there are tiny nooks and crannies. I now unscrew the cover, so that the inside can dry naturaly... but it is too late as the mould has gotten hold.
My previous electric toothbrush - Colgate had the same problem. I assumed that if I bought a more expensive product such as the SoniCare then the would not be a problem but it has not worked.
I suffer from diarrhea... so I don't know if this is connected with electric toothbrush. Some days I am okay and some I am not.
I wish there is something, I can use to kill the bacteria.

Also, you should investigate Cordosyl mouthwash. I use the cover which doubles as a to gargle my mouth. However, I think this is not very sanitary. Because I think that re-using the same cover/cup causes bacteria to grow etc... I notice that changes both in the taste of the cordosyl. I think also rinsing the cup, might cause some water droplets to react with the Cordosyl. I think it needs to be investigated... but at the moment this is just my suspicion at the moment....

You can also try to seal the connections with Press 'n Seal food wrap.

About a year ago, I had recurring food poisoning symptoms (about once per month I would get sick for a few days) and I spent forever trying to figure out what the culprit could be. Many of the possible candidates were discounted because for some reason, this illness only affected me (despite others sharing the same water/food/etc.). I am really leaning to the problem being caused by my Sonicare electric toothbrush, which becomes filthy inside regularly with black and brown goo.
I Google'd this problem (and found this web site) just now, after feeling some mild symptoms and having that all-too-familiar "bleh" taste in my mouth.

Even electric toothbrushes need proper cleaning and maintenance. Bacteria and other microorganisms can accumulate on the bristles. In case of manual toothbrushes we can simply replace them regularly. Modern electric toothbrushes now have interchangable heads for easy replacement.

The problem with Sonicare® toothbrushes is that while they are very effective at cleaning the gunk off your teeth, they are very poorly designed when it comes to killing the bacteria removed once it becomes lodged in the damp dark recesses of your toothbrush.
Many people complain of mold and bacteria problems that they discover has their electric toothbrush as a vector. HERE IS WHAT SONICARE WON'T TELL YOU - THE MAGNETIC RESONANCE THAT IS USED TO VIBRATE THEIR BRUSH HEADS AND RECHARGE THEIR BATTERY ALSO PROMOTES THE GROWTH OF BACTERIA AND MOLD!
Don't believe me? It's simple to test. If you haven't taken apart your Sonicare toothbrush here is how to do so:
1. Most people figure out that the head that screws on should be screwed off. That's why they provide you with the holder. Notice the film build up? If you pour Hydrogen Peroxide on it watch it bubble and froth.
2. The brush head itself can be taken apart for cleaning: hold the brush head firmly and push down while holding the seating cap that screws onto the brush handle with your other hand. You should be able to push the stem free of its collar and then immerse the brush and stem in a glass filled with peroxide. If you haven't done this for a day or two and you brush regularly, you will be amazed at the amount of bacteria that starts to froth and break up. Notice how active the area around the magnets are.
3. Pour peroxide into the the brush handle cup. Notice the froth. It will drip out the drainage hole. Wipe inside with hot water and a fine clothe.
4. Rinse the brush head in very hot water. To test to see if all the bacteria is killed, immerse brush and stem again in peroxide. No bubble, you're brush is clean - bubbling still, let it sit and repeat.
This is a sound cleaning system, and a decent, tho, flawed design. Paradoxically, without keeping an instrument like this clean, it can lead to complicating medical or dental problems rather than alleviating them.
